Misfit — An Unscheduled Smelling

Not all smellings are planned.

What began as a casual evening at Misfit Kava Bar became, gradually, something more familiar. A table gathered, scents appeared, and without much discussion, the format revealed itself. It was, in effect, a smelling.

Misfit lends itself to this kind of shift. Dimly lit, slightly removed, and unhurried, it creates the conditions for attention without insisting on it. Drinks were ordered and fragrances moved across the table in no particular order, each one arriving without introduction and leaving with a handful of impressions.

There is something useful in the absence of structure. Without the expectations of a formal gathering, reactions felt more immediate. Preferences emerged quickly. Some scents held attention longer than others. Conversation moved easily between scent and everything else, as it tends to when the setting allows for it.

While no contributions were required, several were made. A few favorites surfaced, though not unanimously. More notable was the shift itself—the ease with which a space not designed for scent became, briefly, a place for it.

It served as a reminder that smellings need not always be arranged in advance. Given the right conditions, they tend to happen anyway.

For those who were there, it was an unexpected extension of the practice. For those who were not, Misfit remains available, should the occasion arise.
